Old houses need slower cleaning

Port Townsend is a Victorian seaport, and a great many of its homes are genuinely old. That’s the appeal, and it’s also the reason cleaning here isn’t the same job as cleaning a house built in 1998.

Original woodwork, older painted surfaces, softwood floors, antique fittings and lath-and-plaster walls all react badly to the things that make modern cleaning quick. Too much water on old floorboards raises the grain. A general-purpose spray strips wax from woodwork that has taken a century to build it up. An abrasive pad on a Victorian tile or an old enamel bath does damage that cannot be undone.

So I work more slowly in these houses, with less water and gentler products, and I test anything unfamiliar somewhere it won’t show. If something is past what cleaning can fix — a stain in old timber, crazing in original enamel — I’ll tell you that rather than scrub at it until it looks worse.

Salt air is a real factor

Anywhere with a view of the water pays for it in glass and hardware. Salt carries on the wind, settles on windows as a film that ordinary glass cleaner smears rather than lifts, and works at metal fittings until they pit.

Interior glass in a waterfront or bluff-facing home needs doing more often than it would inland, and it needs the salt taken off properly first rather than polished around. Damp is the other half of the same problem — older homes here hold moisture, and bathrooms and north-facing corners want watching through the winter before mildew gets established.

Uptown, downtown and beyond

I work across the whole town: the Uptown residential streets, the houses above and behind the downtown historic district, the newer places out along the highway side, and the homes toward Fort Worden and North Beach.

Downtown parking is the one practical wrinkle. If you’re in the historic core, let me know what the parking situation actually is — whether there’s a spot, an alley, a permit — because twenty minutes circling is twenty minutes not cleaning, and I’d rather plan around it.

Vacation rentals and guest houses

Port Townsend runs on visitors, and a good number of the properties I’m asked about are short-term lets, guest cottages or homes that get lent to family through the summer. The festival weekends in particular create same-day turnarounds with no slack in them at all.

Getting to you

Port Townsend is about fifteen minutes up the road from me in Port Hadlock, so it’s comfortably inside my normal working area.
